This wonderful review in Voice, the magazine of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (EFTO) is a “for teachers, by teachers” review of how to plan a lesson around Can You Believe It? in order to address media literacy and digital literacy. Some of their suggestions:
- CYBI as a read-aloud or reference text, grades 4+
- Some concepts in the book will work at the middle-grade level
- Language studies: create a complete fake news unit
- Creative writing: create your own “fake news”
- Encourage “deep, critical thinking” and terminology
- Social Studies and Science: Research skills and how to identify good sources
- Math: Analyze data and stats about fake news
