Can You Believe It? (Youth Services Book Review, Massachusetts)

5/5 ***** Starred Review

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes

This is an excellent introduction to media literacy for young readers who are bombarded with information daily.

Starting with a challenge to spot the fake headline among a choice of four headlines, Can You Believe It asks readers to do more than simply take a news story at face value. The author walks the reader, step by step, through the process of critically examining news stories and their sources.

Readers are encouraged to assess stories for their biases as well as their truthfulness. Introducing concepts like points of view, bias, click-bait, propaganda, and fact-checkers, young readers are given the tools to critically view the stories they see.
